Infrastructure is vitally important to every branch of transport. Without waterways, inland shipping could not exist. At the very least, water-borne transport requires a well maintained and properly operating waterway network. Waterway capacity, the number of canals and rivers, waterway network intricacy and the link-up with economically significant areas are other aspects that all help determine the success of inland shipping.
